Can B40 replace a CJ-4 oil?
Only if the engine manufacturer confirms that CI-4 is acceptable. CJ-4 was developed for low-sulfur fuel and advanced after-treatment; using CI-4 where CJ-4 is required may not be approved.
Is 20W-50 suitable for cold climates?
It is thicker at low temperature than a 15W or 10W grade. Check the handbook's cold-start requirement and the lowest expected temperature; do not choose a grade by climate alone.
Does API CI-4 guarantee an OEM approval?
No. API CI-4 is a service category; OEM approvals are separate and product-specific. Ask for evidence for the exact product.
