Engine oil for diesel generators and standby power

Generator engines have their own OEM requirements. B40 and B60 are options where the manual specifies CI-4 or CJ-4.

Diesel generators run at fixed speed and may spend long periods on standby or at partial load. The engine manufacturer's oil requirement, load profile and fuel quality matter more than the generator enclosure or brand.

This page helps prepare an enquiry for a generator engine. It does not replace the engine manual, the OEM approval or the current TDS.

Standby vs prime power

A standby generator may run for short periods under light load, while a prime-power unit may run continuously at higher load. The duty cycle affects oil life and the maintenance interval. Use the engine manufacturer's schedule for the actual application.

Why generator specs differ

Generator engines can be derived from truck or industrial engines, but the OEM may specify a different oil category, viscosity or drain interval. Do not assume that an oil approved for a truck is automatically approved for a generator.

What to send in an enquiry

Send the generator model, engine make/model, standby or prime rating, typical load, annual hours and the oil requirement. Add the fuel sulfur level, sump capacity, pack size and destination.

Application FAQ

Questions to settle before ordering.

Can I use a truck engine oil in a generator?

Only if the generator engine manufacturer's requirement matches the oil's category and viscosity. A truck oil is not automatically approved for a generator; check the manual and the TDS.

Should I choose CI-4 or CJ-4 for a generator?

Use the category in the engine manual. CJ-4 is intended for low-sulfur fuel and advanced after-treatment; not every generator needs it, and an older engine may not be approved for it.

How often should generator oil be changed?

Follow the engine manufacturer's interval for standby or prime power. Load, fuel quality, climate and running hours affect oil life. Do not extend the interval without oil analysis or OEM guidance.
